So READ to them or with them everyday. Practice last years skills in preparation for this years new learning challenges and while you are at it, check out the rest of our Summer/ Safety & Back to School Tips under the academic achievement tab in the SAFE Resources section of this web-site.

SAFE-Back to School Tips

As the 2008-2009 school year approaches, here are some helpful tips for Parents to get kids back into the swing of things:

  • Parents, try to be enthusiastic about the upcoming change. If you are excited and confident about the upcoming school year, your child will be, too.
  • Start daily routines that will add to continuity. Begin earlier bedtimes 2-3 weeks before the school year starts; get your child used to eating a good breakfast to start the day.
  • Start getting organized now: visit your pediatrician, plan transportation and child care, stock up on school supplies-a few at a time, mark important start dates and times and other school events on the calendar
  • Visit the school and a classroom and talk with teachers or staff in advance of the generally chaotic and anxious first day of school
  • Create an environment that is conductive to doing your schoolwork. Students need a permanent workspace in their bedroom or another part of the home that offers privacy.
  • Make a well-defined list of activities that your child can and cannot do when they are home alone. Be sure to include such issues as going outside, having visitors and cooking or using other appliances.
  • Learn about all school resources for assisting with you and your Childs education.
  • Review rules and discuss how plans for being “SAFE” both going to and coming home from school.
  • Review internet safety tips with your children at the beginning of the school year.
  • Encourage your child to always try your best and remember that it’s always okay to ask for help.
  • Teach your child to develop good work habits, like writing down assignments and turning in your homework on time.
  • Limit your child’s daily amount of time spent watching the TV.
  • Clear and schedule block of time for each day that your child can discuss learning and to help them get into a homework routine.
  • Parents, at the end of the work day, put aside your concerns and focus on being a parent.
  • Stay “SAFE”, Have great summer fun, and Read, Read, Read!
